Backward masking: criticisms: backward listening people can detect meaningful patterns in anything, especially when told what to listen/look for. Top-down processing (p. 139: when our perceptions are influenced by our expectations or knowledge, as opposed to bottom-up processing, in which our perceptions are determined by the available sensory information.
