PSYC 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Change Blindness, Sensory Memory, Sketchpad
Document Summary
Memory is actually a collection of several systems that store information in different forms for differing amounts of time. Stores retain information in memory without using it for any specific purpose (essentially serve the same purpose as hard drives serve for a computer) Three main stores include: sensory memory, short-term memory(stm), and long-term memory(ltm). Control processes shift information from one memory store to another. Attention selects which information will be passes on to the stm. Encoding the process of storing information in the ltm system. Retrieval brings information form ltm back into stm. Sensory memory is a memory store that accurately holds perceptual information for a very brief amount of time. Ionic memory the visual form of sensory memory, is held for about to 1 second. Echoic memory the auditory form of sensory memory, is held for about 5 seconds.
