Hypothesized a lot of consciousness comes from unconsciousness (particularly fundamental urges like hunger and sex and aggression) These urges are socially unacceptable and hence this is away of psychological defense (method of protecting ourselves) Making the unconscious conscious would liberate clients and help them gain insight from into their problems and past experiences from which they stem.
