Importance of motivation: ability + motivation + direction = job performance, motivation is important for job performance, if someone is very motivated but doesn"t have the ability their job performance wont be good. Motivation theories: need theories, focus, theories, personal needs that workers attempt to satisfy. Need theories: common assumptions, motivation comes from inside, people seek out situations that satisfy their needs, to motivate others we must provide opportunities to satisfy their, but there are some differences between different need theories needs. Two-factor theory: motivators: factors directly related to doing a job, recognition, achievement, responsibility, nature of the work, growth, hygiene factors: elements associated with conditions surrounding the job, supervision, compensation, working conditions, relations with co-workers, benefits. Herzberg"s two-factor theory: hygiene factors, dissatisfaction ------------------------ no dissatisfaction, motivator, no satisfaction ------------------------ satisfaction. Implications for work: provide employees with meaningful tasks, less emphasis on pay.
