PSYC 2310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Collectivism, Tupperware, Juvenile Delinquency
Document Summary
Versions of asch"s experiment have been replicated in more than a dozen countries. Conformity tends to be higher in collectivistic societies. Conformity is higher in the general population than in students. Conformity is the highest when there is a level of interdependence amongst the group (group has shared history) Conformity is lower in the upper segments of any society: they are not the followers they are the leaders, so conformity is not valued. Hunting and gathering societies are also low in conformity (must explore environment) Conformity is high in agricultural societies and lower social segments, since corroboration pays off. Berry"s study (lines with x"s - which one"s match) 1979 correlated the degree of independence with the samples position on an ecocultural dimension. He found a correlation of . 70 between ecocultural dimension of self reliance and independence or nonconformity. Obedience is conformity in response to the commands of an authority gure.
