Avoidance response ---> termination of tone (cs) = reduction of fear (cr) Test: light/tone presented and rat could terminate it by jumping. If a rat has no escape = freezing. If an escape is possible = flight and run for cover. Thus, in the presence of a cs+ producing fear, the animal will innately jump and run ( = not a learned responses). Behavioral observations suggested that the animals avoided without fear. Confirmed by kamin, brimer and black (1963) using the tone on a condition suppression paradigm. Crucial experiment by solomon, kamin and wynne (1953) where the shock was removed but extinction did not occur. Avoidance is based on the expectation to avoid shock fear is important only initially and then it extinguishes response extinction does not occur because the animal cannot change its expectations. Katzev and berman (1974) and flooding (response prevention) Self-mutilation prevented by intense shocks and then by secondary punishment.
