Learning will occur only when the subject t is surprised that is, when what happens is diferent from what the subject expected to happen: you will try and understand why therefore you are learning. Control group: phase 1, phase 2: l & t (light and tone at the same time) us after (footshock, test: test of tone, result: there is a conditioned response. Blocking group: phase 1: l us (conditioning with light followed by footshock, phase 2: l & t us (footshock, test: tone, result: no conditioned response, received extra conditioning but only with the light. Conditioning is not an automatic result of cs-us pairings. Making predictions about what cs will result in conditioned behaviour. For conditioning to occur, the cs must be informative and the us surprising. The blocking phenomenon is said to occur when: Nothing is learned about a novel stimulus despite.
