Used to be a slightly different question involving the soul, as they were philosophers, after all. However, for modern purposes, this question has been adapted to consider the mind . The founders of psych as a science: They were interested in cognitive research questions But they were much more interested in using a method called introspection which is not very applicable to the cognitive area. The person performing introspection reflects on their conscious mental events. Done through verbal report, using mentalistic language . They thought that you could produce objective reports using this method, but only after years of thorough training. During introspection, you may report on emotions you feel, urges, and whatnot. You may not, however, say what the object or stimulus is. If you are shown an apple, you may not state it is an apple. You can say it is red, you want to eat it, it has a stem here, etc.
