PSYC 2740 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Authoritarianism, Field Dependence, Metacognition
Document Summary
Personality and cognition involves a focus on the doing" of personality as opposed to the focus of the trait approach on the having" of personality. People differ in how they see the world because there are differences in personal constructs. The more accessible end of the construct is the emergent pole. Constructs vary in the extent to which they are open to cognitive awareness; preverbal constructs cannot be articulated but involve a feeling of knowing". Tip of the tongue phenomenon: submerged. One or both ends of the construct are not available for conscious reflection and verbalization: suspended. Like repression- current events have made the previously accessible construct now forgotten. Each person is a scientist who is motivated to make as much sense as possible out of life. When we encounter info that does not fit our personal construct we get anxious and need to form new healthier constructs to balance out.
