Document Summary
Primary appraisals: involve assessing whether the event is a threat or a challenge. Secondary appraisals: personal evaluation of whether the person feels that he or she has the ability to cope with the event. Feeling able or unable to cope with a stressor then guides the specific coping responses. Ex. people who see a highly traumatic experience as beneficial because it provides opportunity for personal growth. Differences in personality may exist with both types and they may be associated with one and not the other. Neuroticism is associated with a negative processing bias that is focused on perceived threat. Extroversion is associated with a positive processing bias focused on challenges. Establishing that certain personality traits are linked with certain coping styles is a way of showing that personality factors guide and shape our coping responses. Three classes of coping responses: problem-focused coping. Taking actions to directly solve the problem.
