PSYC 3020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Recognition Memory, Unit, Attention
Document Summary
The five stages of memory: perception/attention stage, when you perceive and pay attention to details in your environment, ex. Recognition memory: determining whether a previously seen item or person is the same as what is currently being viewed. How do we study eyewitness issues: obtain data from actual crimes, use archrival data such as police reports, examine witnesses in naturalistic environments by accompanying police to crime scenes. Independent variables: numerous can be manipulated, estimator variable: Variables that are present at the time of the crime and that cannot be changed. Ex. age, amount of lighting, presence of a weapon, whether the witness was intoxicated. Cannot exert control over these variables therefore, their effect on eyewitness accuracy can be estimated only after the crime: systems variables: Variables that can be manipulated to increase (or decrease) eyewitness accuracy. Ex. type of procedure used by police to interview the witness, they type of line-up used.
