PSYC 3330 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Iconic Memory, Spreading Activation, Episodic Memory
Document Summary
Consolidaion of numerous episodic memories: conway et al. Same informaion had been integrated into semanic memory. Can think about informaion as having categories and classes that can overlap. Assumes semanic memory is organized by semanic relatedness/distance: measures of relatedness. The more a paricular member is provided (canary) the more related it is to that category. Standard resoluion comparisons: compare corical acivaion for visual simuli that vary along dimensions of interest. Look for magnitude of change in brain acivity that is staisically signiicant. Whenever a person encounters or thinks of a concept, that node is acivated: acivaion then spreads to related concepts. Spreading acivaion decreases as it gets further away from the original point of acivaion. Predicts semanic priming: a semanically-related word facilitates processing/ideniicaion of target word, ex. faster to say buter is a real word if preceded by bread than by an unrelated word like nurse . The acivaion of concepts related to what is currently being though about.
