Domestic violence broad term: could include violence between roommates, siblings, parents and children, etc. Spousal violence limiting term: refers to violence/abuse between spouses. Intimate partner violence (ipv) more specific term: refers to any physical or non-physical violence/abuse that occurs between current or former intimate partners. Types of ipv include: physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, economic abuse. Kelly and johnson (2008) distinguished between four types of ipv. Situational couple violence: experienced by men and women, caused by arguments, which end up resulting in violence. Violent resistance: usually used by women against a coercive controlling man. Victimization surveys are the preferred measurement approach: violence against women survey (vaws) 1993. Only conducted once: general social survey (gss) every 5 years. Done on a variety of subjects, ipv being one of them. Allows us to track trends using recent data pertaining to thousands of people across the nation. Most recent survey was done in 2014.
