Document Summary

Week 3-thursday, september 24, 2015: sociological explanations (objectivist) Chicago school (all theories came out of that school) Zone 1: best land, most expensive, business core, government, commerce, industrial, people can afford land. Zone 2: transitional, next to business core, owners are expected that big business will buy land, rent is cheap, impoverished people, inner city, religious ties (china town) Zone 3: working class residential zones, family dwellings, migrated, ethnic/religious (little italy) Zone 4: residential zone, apartments, single family dwellings, brighter than downtown. Policing (look at the resources, and send more to the zones that need it) Community (means to encourage more social organization) Class bias (assume middle class is better, assumes they are disorganized) Discriminatory (more police in one area, the crime rates will obviously increase therefore, the crime is more visible) Main argument: no society is crime free, therefore must serve a purpose and function. Functions of deviance: manifest functions: those that are intended, latent function.
