Church and state were not separate, deviance was a moral issue, devil as the cause of deviance. *don"t focus on mental illness, or bad parenting as a cause of youth crime. Would use exorcisms or try to purify the individual (some of these ways were torturous) Witch hunts targeted females, one of the rst moral panics. *women who gave birth to deformed children, those who claimed to have powers, those who challenged the church dogma, those who did treason, those with mental illnesses. We now live in a society where evil has become a methaphor. *i. e alcohol is the devil in a bottle. Proctor and gamble had 666 in their logo (don"t buy from them, they are devil worshipers etc. ) Thought marilyn manson was tied to devil worship. The rationality of the criminal, based on the idea of free will, blame the individual for crime.
