HORT 15 Lecture Notes - Lecture 29: Phytoremediation
Document Summary
** don"t need to know any of this ** Brown eld - parcel of land that due to past history or location to a nearby pollution source may be c ontaminated and therefore limits its redevelopment. Removal of contaminants from soil / water. Phytoremediation - use of plants to remove pollutants from soil. Main contaminants are heavy metals like mercury, cadmium, copper, nickel etc. Should wash all vegetables before you eat them. Vegetables are bleached with a very diluted chlorine although it will crack the skin and make the vegetable look unacceptable. Very controversial way on how you wash vegetables. One of biggest limiting factor is water on brown eld since they don"t have a easy access. You have to get people to haul water to your site. Security - they are often not in very visible areas so people will go in there and eat your vegetables.
