EARTH458 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Piezometer, Hydraulic Head, Porosity

7 views2 pages

Document Summary

Piezometer: used to measure hydraulic head at a point in geological formation. It is like a tube that is inserted into the ground like a well. Has an opening or screen at one end (inserted end). Elevation inside the piezometer is the average hydraulic head for the screened or open interval. Describe a few ways soil water content can be determined: Porosity is the ration of the volume of the voids over the total volume and can never be greater than 1. The smaller the grain sizer the larger to porosity. Porosity is inversely proportional to grain size in unconsolidated rock. Packing: a cubic packing has higher porosity that rhombehdral. Well sorted sediments are formed by the action of wind, running water, waves etc. Unsorted sediments are formed by glacial and landslide action. Irregularly shaped sediments have higher porosity than sphere shaped.
