Japanese influence on european art: japan exports many things to europe, japanese woodblock artists had to have a different way of portraying distance. Van gough"s 1887 bridge in the rain was inspired by a japanese print hiroshige, ohashi brisge & 1887 portrait of pierre tanguy was a friend of van gough. Seated in a manner of japanese buddhist monk. Surrounded by vincent"s paintings of prints with fiji above is head like a halo. Harvest at la crau (1888) vincent called it very japan great clarity- startling yellow vs. blue sky: so well defined like a print, each brushstroke is a stock of wheat, uses brush and brushstroke to build imagery. Used crude colours (typical of crude prints) Utopian ideal: van gough: in the work la berceuse, madame roulin, 1889 he uses the sunflower paintings as candelabra to frame the image of this mother figure- creates a sort of illusion to mary mother.
