Chapter 4: stress, emotion, and coping in sport and exercise. Dropping out of sport or stopping exercise is an ineffective coping strategy. Stress the body"s response to stressors. Stress occurs in 3 components: event, processing system (brain, stress response. Stress deals with 3 different types of tissues and organs: hormonal system, immune system, intestinal lining of the digestive system. Cognitive appraisal the personal interpretation of a situation. This could lead to harm/loss, threat and challenge. Emotion often influences significance of experience and response. Core emotions related to sport and exercise: anger, anxiety, fright, guilt, shame, sadness, envy, jealousy, happiness, pride, relief, hope, love, gratitude, compassion. Acute stressor occurs over short time periods. Chronic stressor occurs over long time periods. Expected stressor can plan or prepare for it. Competitive stressor experiences prior to, during, or after competition. Non-competitive stressor sport-related but not directly part of competition.
