The act of trying and sentencing a person under criminal law is a way for society to condemn or reject the behaviour of the person. Purpose of criminal sanctions: utilitarian theory. Incarceration is the main use of sanctions: our prison systems are dirty and gloomy, whereas other countries have nice, clean prisons. Rate of reoffending within 2 years: 40: us prisons are even worse, due to overcrowding, there are beds 1 foot from each other, and very little-no private areas.
