Stimulus generalization- tendency for a response that has been reinforced in the presence of one stimulus to occur in the presence of other stimuli. Ex: pigeon learns to peck a circle -> reinforcement of pecking circle -> may also peck oval (generalizes the response of circles to ovals as well) Ex: i like pabst blue ribbon, i like other beer as well. Stimulus discrimination- tendency for a response to occur in the presence of one stimulus but not in the presence of other stimuli even if its similar. Ex: press lever only on green light -> discriminate green light on and off -> never reinforce when light is off so never touch lever (light is the discriminative stimulus) Ex: i like coors light but i hate every other beer.
