Diagnosis requires total of at least 5 symptoms, present daily for at least 2 weeks, representing a change from previous functioning, and causing significant interference/distress. One of the following 2 symptoms required: sad mood, anhedonia. Other symptoms (physical and cognitive): weigh loss/gain, insomnia/hypersomnia, psycho-motor retardation/agitation, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness/guilt, cognitive disruption, recurrent thoughts of death/suicide. Untreated depressive episode - mean duration = 2 to 9 months. Median lifetime number of mdes = 4 to 7. Major depressive episodes vary widely in their character. Persistent low mood for at least 2 years. Gloomy, self-critical, low energy, eating/sleep disturbances, hopelessness symptoms less severe and numerous but more chronic than mdd. Associated with high comorbidity with other disorders, poorer response to treatment, and slowerr rate of improvement over time. Co-occurrence of major depression and persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia) Extreme focus on or avoidance of reminders of loved one. Cluster of symptoms occuring around time of period.
