Document Summary

Title of reading = gentrification: culture and capital in the urban core - Zukin"s definition: a process of spatial and social gentrification . 4 areas of analysis in contemporary gentrification research: Historic preservation --> for the new urban elite. As "selective nostalgia" --> there is a huge focus on historic preservation, as a process of selective nostalgia. Essentially they deem buildings that are aesthetically pleasing to be preserved (generally these buildings also ignore the original function of the buildings) Using history as an aesthetic, when actual histories are erased. Initially the hallmark of gentrification was thought to be the renewal of older built environments in cities. Researchers are looking more into the politics of historic preservation. The activities now are based on a consumption urban model, whereas in the past it was used for mass production of alcohol. They don"t highlight any displacement that has happened. Now, people are there to spend their disposable income.
