Early post 1945, britain was determined to restore and maintain its colonial empire, or at least, very large parts of it. Us was determined to tear down the colonial tradewalls that existed, erected by the colonial powers, to demolish those close trading arrangements and open up the world to american trade and investment. Countries of europe were devastated, economies were in tatters, and needed massive investments to reconstruct, and the only country capable and willing to provide assistance with these reparations was the us! Bretton woods conference was not just an attempt to plan for reconstruction of war-torn economies.
