Document Summary
2 americans sent to nd out what people in the middle east really want. (1) syria and palestine should be a single country. (2) It was never together before, so there were large groups of di erent people. People believed they should just be separate, like before. (3) syria wanted to be self-governed, but if all else fails, anyone but the french will do. Their second choice were the americans, but they didn"t want to, so their third choice were the british. It was an acknowledgement of the concerns of the people. The saying was that they were not colonies, but mandates. Fuse basra, baghdad, and bosul because it was the old mesopotamia. There was very little concern going into the creation of borders. They ended up dividing actual towns and villages. By 1920, the ottoman state still exists, but it is very weak. Turkey is divided up, which leaves a tiny ottoman state under british rule.
