PHRM 221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Dietary Fiber, Osmotic Concentration, Closed System
Document Summary
Formula names a range of calorie concentrations. Options range from moderate to very high. Fibre formulas are usually a mix of insoluble and soluble fibre. Lower water content = higher osmolarity (300-900 mosm/l) Compare and contrast different types of enteral formula. 1 to 1. 5 l sterile bags of formula are spiked with a pump feeding administration tubing set. The formula can infuse over 48 hours while maintaining food safety. Note: reduces risk of gastrointestinal illness from formula contamination. A 4 hour volume of formula is poured from cans/tetras into a feeding bag which connect to the pump. The bag is topped up as needed and replaced every 24 hours. Orders: tube type and insertion method, tube position confirmation, labs, medications. Continuous continuous 24 h infusion of formula at a low rate. Nocturnal overnight continuous infusion at a low rate. Intermittent tid infusion of formula at a fast infusion rate to mimic meals.
