Teaches us about nature vs human law. Explores big questions/issues ex: gender roles, family, honour. Inequities within society (if a person comes from a different class, would their tragedy be deemed as worse?) Tragedy --> changes the idea of citizenship ex: 9/11. Humanizes the government (ex: forced to think about creon"s perspective) Shows us when two contradictory sides clash. Brings about positive change (ex: creon changes his ways) Shows us the con icts of loyalty ex: divine law vs state law. Violence + fragility of human life (ex:syria) Tests borders and transgression (that usually aren"t easy to see) Arguments for ismene: the one that respects the law; criticizes it but doesn"t break it. Through tragedy, we can learn from suffering and re ect on the dilemmas of citizenship. Tragedy and citizenship transcends time and culture. Tragedy is an art (politics is an art) There are different ways of writing/talking about global issues. Teaches us different outlets to talk about politics.
