SOCI 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Erving Goffman, Symbolic Interactionism
Document Summary
Mead & cooley ~ the social production of self. We gain our sense of self through interaction with others. People act towards us in particular ways, and that shapes the way we see ourselves. We look at how others see us, how we react and that is how we see ourselves. We really develop ourselves when we take on the role/ attitude of the other. Humans have the ability to take the role of the other. Understand how other people might respond to situations and objects. Ex: parents responding to your grades vs. friends responding to your grades = understand different responses. We gain a sense of ourselves through this ability. Learn how people act in different roles. We need to know how other people play their roles so we can figure out how we need to act. Role taking (store clerk, parent, police officer. ) Take on attitude of specific others towards self.
