What is sociology? the science of telling people what they already know studying the link between individual experiences and larger social pressures. 3 events: french revolution, industrial revolution, civil war. Completely changed the social model; thinkers were worried. Positive : attempt to explain and predict; the weather. Interpretive : emphasize the subjective, how people come to understand things; interpreting their behaviour. Critical: role of power relations in interaction; narrow focus. Theoretical perspective: central ideas that explain a vast amount with a few differences from one to the next. Functionalist perspective: the idea that there is social consensus for the system to thrive human behaviour is governed by stable patterns of interaction or social structures. Con ict perspective: the idea that society hangs together based on power relations. Classical con ict theory: sees con ict as a means to an end, to break down power relations. Dialectical con ict theory: sees con ict as mundane, as simply part of life.
