HLSC 2110U Lecture 3: L3-Fibrous proteins and enzymes
Document Summary
Each part is made up of three units wrapped around themselves. When this unit is multiplied, the row becomes thicker and stronger. Three alpha chains of collagen are present. Elastin is an elastic protein and has the ability to expand and withstand pressure. Ex: skin; underneath the skin making a mesh-like structure. Artery has to have its walls expand due to pressure from the blood. If it was not elastic, it would rupture. Structures in movement, makes up the muscles. A human goes on without food for a while, uses up glycogen, then lipids, then breaks down muscles for survival. Hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine hydroxylation enzymes are added. Protein is synthesized from dna it becomes a protein as it is, translation occurs and the proteins are transferred from nucleus to rer, protein is made to fit a function for which it is made. What decides for the final structure is the actual sequence of the amino acids.
