At a site, artifacts are surfaced without moving them (pedestalling) to avoid destroying the context. Pedestalling: removing all the dirt surrounding the artifact (using a wooden popsicle: stratigraphic records, archaeology is a destructive science, removing something from an archaeological site. Location & depth of all artifacts: scale map of all features, photographs and scale drawing of the objects, soil samples. Artifacts are: leads to destruction of the context: pictures with/without scales are taken to record features. Features: an artifact that cannot be removed (quiz question: cleaned, catalogued, analyzed in relation to function, environment, activities, diet etc Two approaches taken by archaeologists: ethnoarchaeology, observe & study traditional cultures to resolve archaeological problems. Archaeologists live in a culture to determine the role of a tool in our past: experimental, make or use artifacts to determine their manufacture and function in the past. Artifacts are recreated using current technology to understand how it was made in the past.
