Women tend to swear less and use more polite forms. Context: social roles, context rules: certain types of language are used in certain situations. Children become aware of this at a young age when they are encouraged to play act or pretend to be in certain situations. Primary caregivers: explicit instruction: being taught what is polite, what is vulgar, indirect instruction: picking up things by observing and using primary caregivers as models. Kids try out certain behaviors and language and parents will enforce or discourage those behaviors. Indirect instruction gets children to learn how to think properly as it tells children to pay attention to context and problem solve: other family members affect this. Siblings (which are more distant) reinforce more proper speech. 1st born tend to have more developed lexical and grammatical skills while subsequent have better conversation skills from observing conversation between older sibling and family members.
