Women tend to swear less and use more polite forms. Context: social roles, context rules: certain types of language are used in certain situations. Children become aware of this at a young age when they are encouraged to play act or pretend to be in certain situations. Primary caregivers: explicit instruction: being taught what is polite, what is vulgar, indirect instruction: picking up things by observing and using primary caregivers as models. Kids try out certain behaviors and language and parents will enforce or discourage those behaviors.
