Who has power, who does not how is it used/abused leadership roles relationship to religion how it changes. Power: the ability to bring about results through possession or forceful means. Authority: the right to take certain forms of action. Influence: the ability to achieve a desired end by exerting social/moral pressure. All cultures have some form of politics, either formal or informal. Bands example: the san in cape town, conflict is rare, social control maintained through norms everyone is equal, some people have more influence due to status/reputation. Headman/headwoman: chosen based on both achieved and ascribed status. Big man/big woman: gain prestige through personal connections, gift giving, etc. Chiefdoms permanently allied tribes/villages under one leader rank is usually inherited, chief position must always be filled.
