BIO202H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Ectotherm, Retina, Sympathetic Nervous System
Document Summary
Summary of climate changes: temperature, snow cover, salinity, and sea ice levels. Briefly explain how temperature change may have a significant impact on the physiology of poikilothermic/ectothermic animals. In your explanation, use the following terms: temperature, metabolic rate, respiration, enzymatic processes, and diffusion of oxygen. As poikilothermic/ectothermic animals are those in which their body temperature is influenced by the temperature of their surroundings, as temperature increases, this would cause the body temperature of these animals to increase. As a result, the metabolic rate and respiration rates would increase to rates that are likely unsustainable by the body due to increases in the rate of enzymatic processes. Increased temperature conditions significantly increases metabolic rate in these organisms. This increased metabolic rate increases respiration demand (increases the demand for oxygen and oxygen diffusion), and this increase is limited by the enzymatic processes when temperature increases. The rate of chemical and physical processes speeds up (kinetic activity of molecules are increased)
