Document Summary

In mammals, we pass food through the esophagus and it reaches different parts of the digestive system. General structure: opening to the gut lumen. What"s differe(cid:374)t i(cid:374) a larger a(cid:374)i(cid:373)al ((cid:449)hi(cid:272)h ha(cid:448)e s(cid:373)aller surface area to volume ratios) is that it needs to have a larger surface area of the digestive tract to obtain enough nutrients to support its larger body. Diverticula are these folds of the gut membrane. Intestinal tract is very important for absorption (food it broken down into smaller pieces which can be absorbed for nutrients for the body) Cecum is important for microstructures that help with digestion (the larger the cecum, the more complex gut biome an animal would have, which is especially important for herbivores) Large intestine is the pathway of waste to the external environment (mostly waste, but there is also a loss of water in this system)
