Dynamic Nature of Bone
Bone contains four cell types:
1. Osteocytes - mature bone cells that:
maintain bone matrix and monitor protein and mineral content of
surrounding matrix
participate in bone repair
2. Osteoblasts (develop into osteocytes)- produce new bone
matrix, a process called osteogenesis or ossification
3. Osteogenic (osteoprogenitor) cells - mesenchymal cells which
divide to produce osteoblasts.
