Lecture 10B – Clinical Aspects
Clinical Aspects: Alzheimer's Disease
• Alzheimer's disease is a fatal, progressive and
degenerative
disease that destroys brain cells
• Symptoms include having difficulty remembering
things,
making decisions, performing everyday activities
and
dementia
• Classic neuropathologic findings in AD include
amyloid
plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and synaptic and
neuronal
cell death
Clinical Aspects: Caffeine
• Depolarizes axon hillock and reduces the
threshold for
action potentials
• Neurophysiologic effects of caffeine:
– Enhanced awareness/arousal
– Decreased fatigue
– Feeling of relaxation during stressful events
– Addictive properties (and caffeine can reinforce drug-
seeking
behaviour in people previously on drugs)
