Giotto di bondone, madonna enthroned c. 1310. Cimabue, santa trinita madonna, c. 1290: heritage of abstract style, symbolic language about the characters. Giotto, ognissanti madonna, c. 1310: subjects are the same, medieval conventions, give highlights and shadows. Comparison giotto to cimabue: same subject matter, medieval way of thinking -> more important subjects=larger, giotto was a student of cimabue. Contours of body under the gown: holds infant jesus, pockets of space in the foreground where the angels kneel, middleground - two angels in green on either side, background - figures of saints and angels. Cimabue - wants to show every face. Giotto - overlaps to show sense of space.
