FSC239Y5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Punched Pocket, Stereo Microscope, Bright-Field Microscopy
Document Summary
Based on locard"s principle: every contact leaves a trace. Fibres and hairs can be transferred between individuals and objects or between objects. Needs physical contact for hairs and fibers. Investigative: these cases take priority, holly jones case: no leads, then found many green fibers, found that suspect recently changed bathroom mat, but the whole bathroom was green and the new mat was black. 80% of hairs and fibers are lost in the first 4h from contact/transfer. Factors affecting rate of loss: type of donor/recipient textiles length of hair/fibre, environmental conditions, handling, cleaning. If we know item has been laundered, don"t look for trace. If was worn a lot, chances of finding stuff down. Objectives: efficient collection of evidential extraneous hair and fibres, prevention of contamination between items or environment, proper storage of evidence for later use. Use transparent tape, then mounted on sheet protector.
