Adolescence= period of development presented with a series of challenges, new experiences, a(cid:374)d (cid:374)e(cid:449) de(cid:373)a(cid:374)ds, a(cid:374)d adoles(cid:272)e(cid:374)ts(cid:859) se(cid:374)se of self (cid:373)a(cid:455) u(cid:374)dergo (cid:272)riti(cid:272)al (cid:272)ha(cid:374)ges. Secondary sex characteristics = physical features that distinguish one sex from the other but that are not essential for reproduction. The capacity to reproduce is not attained in pubescence. Puberty= sexual functions reach maturity, marks the beginning of adolescence: primary sex organs fully develop= structure needed for reproduction. Girls who reach puberty early and boys who mature relatively late have a greater risk for psychological and social difficulties. (smoking, drugs) Grey matter= decreases (synaptic pruning removes less active synapses) White matter= growth slows after puberty, neurons become more myelinated. Pruning and myelination occur mostly in prefrontal cortex- (cid:373)atures through 20(cid:859)s: explains risky behaviour in adolescence.
