PSY310H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Leptin, Adrenocorticotropic Hormone, Cortisol
Slide 3
• Puberty is not a single event
• Series of events that unfold over time
• All of the stages of puberty involve interactions between the CNS and the endocrine system
• Levels of existing hormones change, no new hormones
• There are changes in existing parts of the body
Slide 4
• Together these are important for the HP axis
• Hypothalamus
o Plays an important role in monitoring and regulating hormones in the blood
o Can change levels of circulating hormones
• Pituitary gland
• Hypothalamus is connected to the pituitary gland
Slide 5
• Hormones are specialized proteins that are messengers
• All hormones have a particular concentration for which it is maintained
o Job of the hypothalamus
• Puberty involves changes in those set points
• Increasing set-point = increasing concentration of hormone in the blood and vice versa for
decreasing set-point
• Maintains a constant level by resisting changes
o Job of the hypothalamus
Slide 6
• Adrenarche is the first stage of puberty
• HPA
o Around 6-8 a signal is sent to the hypothalamus
• We aren’t sure et hat eatl happens eteen 6-8
• 1st main function is to bring about physical growth by secreting GH
• GH is secreted during sleep
