Independence = greater concern about how things affect oneself, individual + ability to distinguish themselves from other people: general feelings of positive emotion are expected to be most contingent on personal circumstances. Individualism in our society has been increasing: focus on individual happiness is also associated with this increase. Western context, then it may be too narrow: sexual selection.
