Language and emotion: e(cid:373)otio(cid:374) (cid:449)ords fro(cid:373) o(cid:374)e la(cid:374)guage do(cid:374)(cid:859)t always map onto basic emotions of other languages, english has emotion words that are absent in other language and vice versa. Is it that then that some emotions are particular to certain cultures just because they have a certain word for it or not? (unclear) Independent vs. interdependent views of the self + emotion. Independence = greater concern about how things affect oneself, individual + ability to distinguish themselves from other people: general feelings of positive emotion are expected to be most contingent on personal circumstances. Individualism in our society has been increasing: focus on individual happiness is also associated with this increase. Western context, then it may be too narrow: sexual selection.
