Psy341: lecture 1: introduction, theories and causes of abnormal behavior. Mental health needs tends to be transient, but now there is indication that there is long term effects. It may cause poor peer relations and academic difficulties and will lead to adulthood issues, such as psychiatric diagnosis, reduced income, substance abuse, criminal involvement. 1 in 8 children and adolescents experience mental health difficulties. Younger kids: ontario health survey (ages 4-16: 18% met diagnostic criteria in 1983 , and this survey is being repeated again. Sex differenced: boys tend to have higher rates of adhd, asd, conduct disorder and reading disorder, girls tend to have higher rates of anxiety disorder and mood disorder. Demand for child and adolescent services in ontario: 21% visited in the past year, 28% (cid:449)a(cid:374)ted it (cid:271)ut did(cid:374)"t k(cid:374)o(cid:449) ho(cid:449) to get it, 45% increase in mental health related emergency room visits in the last decade.
