PSY344H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Cross-Examination, Data Analysis
Document Summary
3 methods of studying juries: post-trial interviews of juries. This is not possible in canada as criminal code of canada does not allow you to discuss the case once you have been a juror, but is common in the us. For example, ask juror what made him/her give out the verdict they did. Problems of retrospective accounts = you are asking them about the trial months later and asking why they made the decision. Studies show that jurors won"t remember why they made that decision. They may not appreciate or recognize factors that contributed to their verdict: archival analysis. For example, can analyze data to see whether people of a certain ethnicity or area (low socio- economic area vs. a rick area) have a higher rate of getting arrested. Useful tool for research, high in external validity. Can do correlation studies, but cannot infer causation: jury simulations. Run mock trials with mock jurors, hypothetical verdicts are given.
