Lecture #1: intro to sociology & sociological imagination. Sociology systematic study of human behavior in a social context. Informs us about social structures, behavior, and culture. Gets rid of myths through research and statistics (i. e. black people commit more crimes) Seeing the general in the strange in the familiar. Identify social context in which we live and how it shapes our lives. Way of looking at the world that allows links between private problems and social issues (i. e. being laid off) Connecting life of individual with history of society. We are not a product of structure, but it is an influence. Egoistic suicide suicide based on feeling alone. Altruistic suicide suicide based on killing yourself for others (i. e. soldier killing themselves for others) Social solidarity - the middle, less suicide.
