Exploring a “Masculine” Concept of Caregiving
Social Construction of Masculinity
Hegemonic Masculinity (R. Connell): ideal or preferred type of masculinity
Masculinity is multiple
Influence from social environment
Care work is gendered = characterized as “women’s work”
- expose conceptions that are more broad
Connell conceptualized “hegemonic masculinity”
- doesn’t mean common type of masculinity, preferred type or ideal
- hierarchy of masculinities = MULTIPLE but not valued equally
- socially constructed identities through socialization (cues and behaviours)
- may not achieve, but measured against ideal type of masculinity
- definitions differ depending on the person (where you were raised, family, etc.)
- sex, class, sexual orientation and gender (factors)
- masculinities meant to be dominant, strong, independent, powerful, etc. or marginalized
- shifting from nuclear family model (women as stay-at-home mothers and men as
breadwinners)
Different Conceptions of Care
Care as a gendered phenomenon
How does the social construction of masculinity and femininity impact the way
caring roles and relation to care are defined?
Gilligan: Girls are socialized to feel responsible for nurturing and assume this
identity by providing care when they are older.
Boys are socialized to separate themselves and focus identity formation on
competition and detachment.
Socializing children for different roles in society
Gilligan = one of the first to discuss differences in moral development of boys and girls
- skewed understanding due to using white boys
- noticed difference in caring and relationships and connections with other people (girls
are concerned more than boys, boys more inclined towards justice, due to gender and
relationship with mother NOT biological fact)
