The americans become the rst and only country to put someone on the moon which is what they claim to be a victory in the space race. 1958 : khrushchev comes into power maybe mainly because he wants to reform agriculture. January 1959 : fidel castro takes power in cuba and identifies himself with strict communism and with the soviet union. Cuba is the largest island in the caribbean. The cold war itself is less intense with the peaceful coexistence. 1959 : khrushchev is the first soviet leader to visit the us. He appears more human, communism is less an evil ideology. Still he refuses to be impressed by the americans. There is a lot of hope after this visit.
