Document Summary
Atlantic cod (lives in north atlantic), very important fish stock for a lot of people. Main fish that people ate throughout europe. Sexually mature at age 3, in colder oceans, could be 7 years. Fairly easy to catch with bait or even a net. Cod can be dried, salting them and laying them to dry. Within a few weeks of drying, they lose half of their mass in water. Source of protein that can last all winter, months maybe years. Typical day in newfoundland, many boats going out to bring back massive amounts of cod to eat and to export. In 1992, fisherman stopped pulling up cod, because ecologists did not have a good understanding on the impact on the commercial fishing of wild cod (look at graph in slideshow) Cod were declared close to extinction, not enough out there to continue to use it as commercial industry.
