Document Summary

Peripheral nervous system includes nerve structures outside of the central nervous system. Autonomic nervous system- does things automatically, fight or flight response. Afferent= carries information to the cns (sensory approach ) Efferent= carries information from the cns (motor exit ) (includes sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves: autonomic nervous system: In both parasympathetic and sympathetic, they synapse (connect to) another neuron, which send information to the target organ. Constant activation of the sympathetic system can lead to many body and brain changes, such as post-traumatic stress disorder. Neur-axis: the axis of the nervous system. The top of the head is the dorsal or superior axis. Horizontal section is parallel to the ground. Frontal or coronal section is like slicing bread (cutting brain in the middle of the head) Sagittal (straight down center of brain dividing left and right hemispheres) Meninges: three protective (mechanical) layers that cover the central nervous system. Inside of skull isn"t smooth or round: there are bone-like protrusions.
