Document Summary
An impairment of an individual"s sound system that results in a significant problem with speech sound production, causing it to differ from age and culturally based expectations: becomes evident during developmental period of speech-sound acquisition, birth-9yo. 4%-13% affected: 4. 5% boys, 3% girls, stems from articulation or phonological impairment. Articulation (phonetic) impairment- inability to articulate certain speech sounds correctly: distortions, sound substitution error that don"t result in a phonemic or meaning difference. Phonological (phonemic) impairment- involves rules that govern sound patterns in a given language. A person"s sound system may not permit production of word-final consonants: obstruents, consonants produced with obstruction in vocal tract and includes stops, fricatives, and affricates, homonymy- two words sounding the same but having different meanings. 40% ssd attributed to recurrent middle-ear infections, developmental motor speech disorders and other developmental disorders: dialectal and linguistic diversity. Speech variation- differences in speech that arise from a dialect or foreign accent, is normal aspect of language and not a ssd.
